It was Jordan Castaldo’s turn to play hero on Wednesday night at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.
Castaldo belted a two-out, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a dramatic 5-4 win over the Hamilton Thunderbirds in Intercounty Baseball League play.
Hamilton led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning but the Leafs scored three runs in the seventh and a single in the eighth before Castaldo’s heroics in the ninth ended the game.
Toronto improved to 13-8 with the win, the third straight for the Leafs, while the lowly Thunderbirds slipped to 3-16. It was a discouraging loss for the T-Birds, who pulled out all the stops by using five pitchers after beating Toronto twice in Hamilton already this season.
“We just seem to have a lot of trouble with these guys,” Leaf owner Jack Dominico said. “That was a big homer for Jordan to hit and we’ll take the win, especially after falling behind so early.”
Hamilton opened the scoring with three runs in the fifth on a two-run home run by Jordan Windisch and a run-scoring single from Matt McGraw. McGraw added another RBI single in the seventh to make it 4-0.
But the Leafs chipped away with three runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Degrace, a bases loaded walk by Castaldo and an error. Another costly Hamilton error resulted in a run in the eighth to tie the game before Castaldo’s game-winning homer.
Jeremy Walker had two hits and scored a run and Kyle Morton also had two hits for the Leafs, who had 10 hits off five Hamilton pitchers. Reliever Matt Gottschalk took the loss after entering the game in the ninth and getting two outs before giving up Castaldo’s homer.
Toronto starter Matt Walker went 6 1/3 strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Reliever Ryan Mashinter got the win with 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
McGraw wound up with three hits, two RBI and two stolen bases for the Thunderbirds, who had eight hits.
