The Toronto Maple Leafs are starting to get on a bit of roll.
Kern Watts drove in the winning run with a ninth inning single as the Leafs won their fourth straight game, downing the Barrie Baycats 7-6 in Intercounty Baseball League play Thursday night in Barrie.
Toronto (14-8) moves to within 2 1/2 games of the second place Baycats (16-5) with the win and now trails first place Brantford by just three games thanks to their longest winning streak of the season. The Leafs host the Ottawa Fat Cats in a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.
“It’s been a struggle at times this season, but we’re starting to come on now that we’ve got most of our team back,” Leaf owner Jack Dominico said. “Getting a win here is really big for us and gets us right back into the race for first.”
Leafs trailed 4-1 heading into the seventh inning but scored five runs in the seventh to take the lead before the Baycats replied with two runs in the bottom of the inning to again tie the game.
Watts’ single in the ninth, his second hit of the game, drove home Rob Gillis with the game winning run and reliever Cody Powell survived a shaky ninth to close the game out for the save, despite walking two batters.
Toronto had 10 hits in the game, with Watts adding two RBI and a run scored to his two hits. Jordan Castaldo, who won Wednesday night’s game against Hamilton with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, belted a three-run shot to help key the big seventh inning.
Jeremy Walker also homered for the Leafs and added a single and scored twice. Damon Topolie also had two hits for Toronto.
Starter Marek Deska went six innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. Reliever Ryan Mashinter got the win with two hitless innings, striking out one and walking one, before Powell finished up.
Former Leaf Paul Spoljaric went five innings for the Baycats, allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Chris Kemlo was the loser, allowing six runs – just two earned – on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four.
Ryan Spataro went 4-for-4 for the Baycats, scoring once and driving in a pair of runs. Jordan Lundberg had two hits and two RBI and Stevie Lewis also had two hits for Barrie.
