The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally made the climb all the way into first place in the Intercounty Baseball League.
The streaking Maple Leafs won their seventh straight game, crushing the host Guelph Royals 13-1 on Thursday night, and moved into a three-way tie for first place in the IBL with the victory.
Marek Deska, Ryan Mashinter, Mark Sikorski and Cody Powell all combined on a four-hitter and veterans Damon Topolie and Jeremy Walker each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Leafs (17-8) to the dominating win. Toronto’s seven-game win streak has coincided with three-game losing streaks by the Barrie Baycats (16-7) and the Brantford Red Sox (15-6), leaving the Leafs in the three-way tie at the top after a tough start to the season.
“We’ve really come a long way in the past few weeks,” Leaf owner Jack Dominico said. “Tonight we got a little bit of everything and we’re really on a roll now.”
The Leafs travel to London for a doubleheader against the Majors on Canada Day starting at 4 p.m. They then host the seventh place Royals (9-14) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.
Toronto grabbed a 4-0 lead after four innings and exploded for five runs in the fifth on just one hit to make it an easy night for Deska and the relievers.
Deska went six innings, allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Mashinter tossed a perfect seventh, Sikorski a perfect eighth and Powell finished up, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth.
Dan Gibbons hit a solo homer for the Leafs while Kyle Morton had two hits, scored twice and drove in another run. Every Leaf that played had at least one hit, as Toronto made the most of 11 hits in the game.
Loser Brett Lawson lasted four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Jeremy Ware hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to account for Guelph’s lone run.
