The Toronto Maple Leafs won their second straight game to start the season as Drew Taylor threw five shutout innings to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 6-3 win over the Kitchener Panthers Sunday at Christie Pits.
Taylor (2-0) allowed just one hit, a fifth inning double by Mike Winter, after he retired the first 12 men he faced. He struck out one and walked one and has now allowed one run on three hits in 10 innings in his first two starts, both wins.
Four relievers finished up for the Leafs, including Mike Lynch who needed just two pitches to get a double play to end a bases load threat by the Panthers in the top of the ninth inning.
Dan Gibbons had two hits, drove in a run and scored another for the Leafs, while Brian Ivan also had two hits. Tony Lewis and Jeremy Walker hit solo homers for Toronto.
Kitchener starter Wes Koch took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits over four innings, striking out two and walking none. Mike Andrulis had an RBI single and four Panthers had a double each to account for Kitchener’s five hits, as the Panthers scored two runs in the top of the ninth on two Toronto errors in their first game of the season.
Leafs host the Oshawa Dodgers Sunday, May 17 at 2 p.m. on Team Calander Day at Christie Pits.
