Jeremy Walker had three hits, including a three-run homer, and the Toronto Maple Leafs took advantage of seven errors to edge the Oshawa Dodgers 12-9 to move into first place in the Intercounty Baseball League Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits.
Toronto manager Tim Harkness said he’ll take his team’s 3-1 start to the season, even though there were some tense moments Sunday.
“It was a sloppy game for sure, but it was good to come back after having lost yesterday (Saturday in Brantford),” Harkness said. “We’re showing a lot of spirit on this team.
“It was a cold day too, the conditions weren’t great, and it was especially tough on the pitchers.”
Drew Taylor (3-0) went six strong innings to pick up his third straight Sunday afternoon win of the season. Taylor allowed three runs but they were all unearned on five hits, striking out five and walking one. He’s now allowed just one earned run in 16 innings pitched to date.
Leaf batters pounded out 14 hits. Raul Borjas also had three hits and drove in a run and Kyle Morton and Jon Fernandez both added a pair of hits for the winners.
Oshawa starter Chris Nigarski took the loss, allowing five runs – all unearned – on seven hits, with many of the Dodgers seven errors costly ones.
Kyle Fillier led Oshawa with three hits and three RBI and also scored three runs, while former Leaf Sean Travers contributed a pair of hits as the Dodgers slipped to 2-1.
The Leafs are in Guelph Tuesday before hosting the Mississauga Twins next Sunday at 2 p.m.
