LONDON – The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t have much of a reason to celebrate on Canada Day.
The Leafs lost both ends of a doubleheader to the London Majors on Wednesday, losing the opener 6-5 in eight innings and also dropping the second game 7-5, to fall from second place in the Intercounty Baseball league, into fourth place.
Toronto (14-8) started the day second but ended the day slipping behind both Guelph and Brantford into fourth place, 3 ½ games behind the league-leading Barrie Baycats. The Leafs are in Misssissauga Friday and host the Guelph Royals in a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. at Christie Pits.
“It was a long day and this is a long way to come to lose a pair of games,” Leaf owner Jack Dominico said. “They (the Majors) were ready to play and took advantage of their opportunities.”
London also took advantage of the Leafs sub-par road record as well. The Leafs are 10-2 at Christie Pits but now just 4-6 on the road after the twin-bill loss.
In the opener, Will Richards hit a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, leading the Majors to a 6-5 victory.
Richards also hit a two-run homer in the first as part of a four-run London first and the Majors scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, setrting the stage for Richards game-winning blast.
